Inspirational Book
The setup is excellent; each calendar date has a small 1-3 page story with a great message or insight. Then each day finishes with a few pointers on what you can do to magnify that message in your life. Mark Nepo is a writer, practicing Buddhist, cancer survivor, teacher, and poet who has published over 17 books and is widely regarded as one of the top spiritual leaders today. I love The Book of Awakening because the daily reading is short and to the point. It makes it easy to commit to it, and if you miss a day, it’s not the end of the world to catch up the next day.
Share the Experience
It is also a great daily practice to share these little ‘awakenings’ with loved ones. Here are some thoughts on how you can take this book’s message to the next level:
- Take 5 minutes a day to read it together with your love and see what new conversations arise from it. You might get to know your long-time sweetie in a whole new way.
- Have a long-distance best friend that your heart aches for? “read” it together and see how you can enhance your daily aha! Moments by sharing them long distance.
- Have teens that you want to encourage in an entirely different way? Perhaps this becomes part of your daily routine to open up new lessons and topics to discuss with them.
- Feel “Journal burnout”? (This is such a common diagnosis). Do you love journaling but feel like you don’t know what to write? Perhaps reading the daily chapter will spark some newfound inspiration.
I love to give The Book of Awakening as a gift. Especially around the holiday season, it invites the person to start January 1st of the new year. The book does not have to be enjoyed front to back. You can begin at any time and on any date. The teachings and insights are entirely flexible and always relevant. So you do not need to read them in any particular order. You can even go nuts and not read them by their specified dates.
